Paul has grown up in a house where his mother has burdened him with the fact that the family is not as wealthy as some of the other’s in the neighborhood. The author does a fantastic job of not revealing much information on what Goodman Browns intentions are with the devil. This could be left to interpretation from the audience. For example, when one thinks of the company Apple, they automatically make an association with the iPod/iPhone. When one thinks of an obese person, unfortunately, they automatically think of someone who is lazy and irresponsible. The previous were two examples of what is known as the halo effect and the devil effect. In this paper I will be discussing how the halo effect can be both positive and negative, depending on whether or not it is affecting a person or product. I will also be discussing how the devil effect is something that is always negative because it is basically an assumption that doesn’t allow room for a real evaluation of a person or product. According to Interplay: The Process of Interpersonal Communication, written by Ronald B. Alder, Lawrence B. Rosenfeld, and Russell F. Proctor II, the halo effect is, â€Å"the tendency to form an overall positive impression of a person [or product] on the basis of one positive characteristic† (396). The halo effect can be very effective and good for products. What I mean by this is that is can help with company sales, like we can see with Apple. The decision to purchase will be easy and quick. When it comes to a person, the halo effect can of course be beneficial for the person who is pretty, and therefore intelligent, but when it comes to the person who is overweight and therefore lazy, it can pose an issue. This would be the devil effect. The devil effect, or the reverse halo effect, is the tendency to form an overall positive impression of a person/product on the basis of one negative characteristic or trait. According to the article, Physical Attractiveness Bias in Hiring: What is Beautiful is Good, written by Comila Shahani-Denning, â€Å"There is considerable empirical evidence that physical attractiveness impacts employment decision making, with the result that the more attractive individual, the greater the likelihood that that person will be hired. This is generalization is known as the ‘what is beautiful is good’ stereotype† (14). What we can see from this quote is basically that if a beautiful woman comes in to interview for a managers position she will most likely be hired versus, lets say, an obese woman. Based solely on looks, and not on qualifications, the hirer will have already assumed that because this woman is beautiful she must also be intelligent (halo effect). And because the other woman is obese she just has to be lazy and irresponsible. This is an example of the devil effect. The hirer will probably ask themselves something along the lines of â€Å"if this person cannot manage her own weight how will she manage this office? † It is yet unfortunate, that often many decisions in the business world can be made based on that one negative or undesirable trait in a person. The decision not to hire her because she isn’t skinny and pretty is biased and unfair. â€Å"Making hiring decisions based on non-job-related factors is detrimental to the overall organizational performance† (Shahani-Denning, 14). She may actually be more qualified for the position, and have a more impressive resume and job experience, versus the â€Å"beautiful† woman. When I think about how the halo and devil effect relate to today’s culture/popular culture, I think of the police department and how people get profiled on the street. There is a lot of controversy going on that police profile based too much on looks and not enough on behaviors. For example, there are often times when I am walking down the street or about to take the train and I will see the police stopping a young kid who is dressed baggy. I believe they assume based on his baggy attire that he cannot be anything more than a â€Å"thug/dealer† or delinquent kid cutting school. They may be stopping this kid while someone walking right past them, who might actually look like your average Joe, could actually be the â€Å"thug/dealer. † This would be the devil effect. But, because this average Joe is more attractive in the sense that he isn’t wearing his pants low, he will be overlooked or looked up upon by the police versus the rest of society as someone â€Å"good. † This would be the halo effect. Overall, the halo and devil effect are very interesting. I believe these effects impact that world unconsciously every single day. We can look to many products, such as Apple products, and many people, like those involved in hiring processes to fully understand how both can play out in todays society.

Digging -by seamus Heaney The poet, Seamus Heaney uses simple words in his poem which is beautifully portrayed as well as easy to understand. The poem is basically about the poets respect and admiration of his father's and grandfather's hard work. The poem begins in the present tense form. The poet, Heaney, is in his room, writing while his father is digging. It can be assumed that the poet is near a window so that when he looks outside he can see his father digging. It is important to note that Heaney â€Å"looks down† at his father's â€Å"straining rump†.Literally his position at the window is elevated but we also get the sense that Heaney somehow feels superior to manual work and that he does not like this feeling. The paradoxical â€Å"coarse boot nestled† shows the physicality and hardwork of digging alongside the love his father has for it.Heaney uses a two line stanza beginning with the exclamatory â€Å"By God† to take us further back to his grandfather's digging skills. The exclamation and the conversational tone add a feeling of being with Heaney as he reminisces. Neatly Heaney has taken us back to his forefathers to show that working with the land has always been a tradition in the family. He has broken this chain by choosing to become a writer. The next stanza is a memory of visiting his grandfather as he cuts peat from the bog.The â€Å"bottle corked sloppily with paper† reflects Heaney's clumsiness in practical matters but also a different use of paper to the one he is really skilled at. The penultimate stanza reveals the difficulties created by Heaney's wish to write. Scott Peterson Found Guilty of First-Degree Murder Scott Peterson was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson, and second-degree murder in the death of his unborn son Conner. The jury reached a verdict in the case in its seventh day of deliberations, after three jurors were replaced during the trial, including the first foreman. The verdict came only eight hours after Judge Delucchi dismissed the first foreman of the  jury, who was replaced by a male alternate. The new foreman was juror No. 6, a firefighter and paramedic. First, Judge Delucchi replaced juror No. 7, who reportedly did her own independent research or investigation into the case, contrary to court rules. The judge told the jury they had to start over in their deliberations. They responded by electing a new foreman. The following day, the judge dismissed juror No. 5, the former foreman of the jury, who reportedly asked to be removed from the case. The jury deliberated all day Wednesday with the new foreman in place, took the day off Thursday due to the Veterans Day holiday, and deliberated only a few hours Friday before announcing they had a verdict. The total deliberations lasted almost 44 hours  after the jury heard five months of testimony from 184 witnesses. Scott Peterson was charged with the murder of his pregnant wife Laci Denise Peterson and their unborn son Conner Peterson who disappeared sometime between December  23 and December 24, 2002. The badly decomposed remains of Laci Peterson and the couples fetus washed ashore in April 2003, not far from where Peterson said he went on a solo fishing trip the day she vanished. They believe that he purchased the 14-foot Gamefisher fishing boat two weeks before she disappeared for the sole purpose of using it to dispose of her body in the San Francisco Bay. Prosecutor Rick Distaso told the jury that Peterson used an 80-pound bag of cement he purchased to make anchors to weigh down Lacis body at the bottom of the bay. They showed jurors photographs of five round impressions in the cement dust on the floor of Petersons warehouse. Only one anchor was found in the boat. Prosecutors also believe that Peterson originally planned to use a golfing outing as his alibi for the day that Laci disappeared, but for some reason dumping her body into the San Francisco Bay took longer than he planned and he was stuck with using the fishing trip as his alibi. The problem the prosecution had was there was no direct evidence proving that Peterson murdered his wife, much less disposed of her body. Their case was constructed totally on circumstantial evidence. The Defense of Scott Peterson Defense attorney Mark Geragos promised the jury in his opening statement that he would present evidence that would show that Scott Peterson was innocent of the charges, but in the end, the defense could not produce any direct evidence pointing to any other suspect. Geragos mostly used the prosecutions own witnesses to offer the jury alternative explanations of the states circumstantial case. He brought Scott Petersons father to the stand to explain that Scott had been an avid fisherman since an early age and that it was not unusual for Scott not to brag about major purchases, like the fishing boat. Geragos also offered testimony that indicated that Peterson used the remainder of the 80-pound bag of cement to repair his driveway. He also tried to explain his clients erratic behavior after Lacis disappearance to being hunted by the media, not because he was trying to elude or deceive the police. The defense case took a major setback when an expert witness, who testified that Conner Peterson was still alive after December  23, did not stand up to cross-examination which brought out that he had made a huge assumption in his calculations. Many courtroom observers, even those with backgrounds in criminal prosecution, agreed that Mark Geragos did an excellent job during the prosecutions case in offering the jury alternate explanations for almost every aspect of the circumstantial evidence. of the experiment which is Hooke’s Law. The results obtained are slightly incorrect due to any errors as part of the experiment. My calculations were all shown for trial one which whereas follows. In relation to the graph, the line does not pass through the origin as there were uncertainties. The line therefore starts a few cm from the origin on the y axis. The slope in the graph indicates the spring constant. It can be seen that the spring constant value in the graph does not match my result for trial no.1 as I have taken the spring constant value in N/cm. If I take the values in N/m and average all the values of the spring constant from my calculations I will end with a result equal to the gradient or slope of the graph that is 0.227. The units taken for every other value is standard and therefore is correct. My results are reliable as they do result in the Force being proportional to the Extension. I feel t hat my data is reliable and the graph does show that the extension of the spring directly proportional to the force that is applied to it. We also found that the spring constant and the elastic potential energy increases due to the extension of the spring being proportional to the force. Evaluation: I have found that the experiment did have many errors which could have been improved. There were both systematic and random errors involved in the experiment. The meter ruler (uncertainty of  ±0.05cm) and the digital balance (uncertainty of  ±0.1g) had uncertainty’s which could have altered the accuracy of the results. The experiment also had a parallax error due to the carelessness of me not observing the pointer and the length in the straight path. My equipment was not very accurate as I was given a meter ruler and not an attached ruler. This could have made it very inaccurate as the ruler was leaning over a wall. I could only take one reading per mass, as time management was an issue, which is not reliable as taking more than two readings and averaging the answer will give a more accurate result. The next time I perform this experiment, I will need to make sure that I have at least three readings per mass and should take the average of the three readings to minimize the errors. I should also make sure that the meter ruler is not leaning on a wall and that it is held on by a clamp or that I have the ruler stuck behind the clamp stand. While repeating the experiment one should also put a pointer on the hook to avoid parallax error and get the measurements even more accurate. Wasif Haque

For years, sex appeal was perhaps the most important attribute of a product. Companies would show young, half-naked bodies in their TV commercials and magazine advertisements. The producers sought to force the public audience to take pleasure by looking at these beautiful ladies, while also making viewers feel naughty at the same time. Advertisers thought the audience would not be able to avoid looking at these well-endowed women. And to consumers, the women were appealing, and that made the product itself appealing. In some recent commercials, however, the concentration has changed from sinful desires to the more healthy approach to life. Everyone wants to appear healthy and in good shape. To achieve this, many people are eating better, working out more ofte n and using healthier products on their skin. To demonstrate the idea about natural products, I have chosen three advertisements to show how these companies use nature to sell their products . According to health care specialists, the best way to stay healthy is to use natural products such as products containing natural vitamins and minerals. In fact, even in ancient history, natural plants were used to make skin-care products. Berries and shrubs were pounded into pastes that protected the skin, while also keeping gnats and flies away (Lee 18). Therefore, in ancient times and in the present, as long as an advertisement mentions something about a natural ingredient or contains a visual look of nature, consumers will more than likely buy that product. In a recent Eucerin ad from a Health and Beauty magazine, Eucerin is publicized as a skin lotion used to protect against the sun. The top of the black and white ad shows a nude woman from the shoulders up.

Hedda Gabler Essay

In today’s society we have the privilege of doing as much as we can in order to succeed in life or provide for one self. Hedda Gabler sadly did not have this privilege and neither did any other women throughout the 1800s. The roles for gender, both man and women were set in stone. The man was meant to provide stability and the woman to provide children and preform other household chores. All of Hedda’s life the most she could hope for was to marry into wealth or high stature. She wasn’t able to work or make money for herself without being frowned upon. Yet, Hedda seemed to push as many boundaries as possible and go against everything for her to have a shining moment and try to make her life memorable. This aspect I find extremely significant considering how different life for women and men is in current society. He portrayed every character in a way that each one had some way of going against the world they knew and this scandalous assortment of characters made for an enticing perspective on the role of men and women in the late 1800s. The whole point I feel Ibsen wanted to make was that everyone should analyze themselves accordingly because his view on the society made it clear that he disagreed with what was going on at the time. Practically every critic in the play considered Hedda to be a monstrous creature, yet I doubt that anyone wanted to look past the play and really, what if? What if this way of living is unfair? What if it were different? This outrageous play was put in place to cause a widespread eye opening to all that were willing to watch it. Ibsen tore every piece of society he had a problem with into pieces and carefully morphed them into something that could inspire an entire generation of people to change there ways. There was Hedda with her masculinity and shocking personality that made women uncomfortable in their seats; her character made them overthink about how women act, how they should act, and what is or should be acceptable. Teasmen made the men feel as if he was a complete fool to swoon and beg in order to gain Hedda’s approval. Thea may have seemed to act lady like and her type of personality was what was usually accepted of a women but I feel she did have her weaknesses yet at the same time she had a sneaky way of being manipulative in trying to get out of her situation as well. She was similar to Hedda in that sense, the only difference is that Hedda would always love to be the center of attention which made her more acknowledged. Henrik Ibsen attention to social issues in my opinion brought out all the good, the bad, and the ugly of that times society. He had much attention to detail and an advanced way of thinking which effectively brings all the problems of society into light.

Our socially constructed reality

Think Piece Sociological Significance and Individual Behavior What is the relationship between â€Å"definition of the situation† and â€Å"socially – constructed reality'? Our social construct provides us with basic assumptions of everyday life. These social influences have an affect on our perception of reality and situations. While with a group of people you mainly hang out with the definition of a situation of a situation will be similar, because you all are from the same social group: and have similar social backgrounds.But if you are not with a group that you are not familiar tit it may not be so easy for you all to see the situation the same because your social reality are different. Example: In an urban neighborhood where Tim, and his group of friends hangout during the day and night, they often hear gunshots. So one night Time's cousin Johnny came to visit from his mansion in Texas. While they were outside hanging out gunshots were heard. After hearing the gun shots Tim and his friends continued as if they heard nothing.Sonny's reaction was very different than Tim and his friends in fact he felt very uncomfortable. Because Tim and his group of friends are accustomed to that social structure their interpretation of the situation was different than Johnny, because in his social reality that doesn't and should not happen. This example explains how a persons social reality can change how they interpret the definition of a situation. Why are these important in explaining the social influences on human behavior?These are important in explaining human behavior because our chosen behavior is determined by our social influences and social surroundings (socially – constructed reality) which determine how we react and interpret situations (definition of a situation). Why is it that social influence is very often more useful for predicting – or explaining – the behavior of an individual person than would be there psychological fr ame of mind? Though we take part in the social construct of reality, it's still not entirely a product of our own doing.Our social influences make us who we are and affect how we act and handle situations. Even though we have our own thought we still live our lives through what is socially acceptable. So observing a psychological frame of mind may not be as accurate because we say one thing, but in a social setting we handle it differently. Example: Elevator Video The people on the elevator knew that it was not their norm to turn backwards in the elevator.But they still wanted to conform to what seemed socially normal at the time, so they turned around Just like everyone else in the video. So even though we have our own thoughts and feelings about situations , our social influence and social setting still determine how we behave. If anyone could have asked the independent variables on the elevator if they would turn backwards on an elevator if everyone else was doing it they would h ave more than likely answered no, but because o the social pressure to conform they behaved totally opposite.
