For example, when one thinks of the company Apple, they automatically make an association with the iPod/iPhone. When one thinks of an obese person, unfortunately, they automatically think of someone who is lazy and irresponsible. The previous were two examples of what is known as the halo effect and the devil effect. In this paper I will be discussing how the halo effect can be both positive and negative, depending on whether or not it is affecting a person or product. I will also be discussing how the devil effect is something that is always negative because it is basically an assumption that doesn’t allow room for a real evaluation of a person or product. According to Interplay: The Process of Interpersonal Communication, written by Ronald B. Alder, Lawrence B. Rosenfeld, and Russell F. Proctor II, the halo effect is, â€Å"the tendency to form an overall positive impression of a person [or product] on the basis of one positive characteristic† (396). The halo effect can be very effective and good for products. What I mean by this is that is can help with company sales, like we can see with Apple. According to the article Creating the Brand Halo Effect. † Branding Strategy Insider, written by Derrick Daye and Brad VanAuken, â€Å"Profits were up 384 percent. And the stock was up 177 percent. And Apple’s net profit margin increased from 3. 3 percent to 9. 6 percent, an astonishing jump. Apple put the bulk of its marketing budget behind the iPod creating a halo effect that helped the entire Apple product line. : † We can see that customers have this psychological association or imprint of the â€Å"iPod† with â€Å"Apple† because of a strategic/ marketing move by the company: â€Å"To cut through the clutter in today’s overcommunicated society, place your marketing dollars on your best horse. Then let that product or service serve as a ‘halo effect’ for the rest of the line. † This is exactly what Apple did and it worked out in their favor. Now, when someone hears Apple, they think iPod, and because they think iPod they think things like â€Å"stylish, innovative, etc, and will have no probably investing in more products by Apple. The decision to purchase will be easy and quick. When it comes to a person, the halo effect can of course be beneficial for the person who is pretty, and therefore intelligent, but when it comes to the person who is overweight and therefore lazy, it can pose an issue. This would be the devil effect. The devil effect, or the reverse halo effect, is the tendency to form an overall positive impression of a person/product on the basis of one negative characteristic or trait. According to the article, Physical Attractiveness Bias in Hiring: What is Beautiful is Good, written by Comila Shahani-Denning, â€Å"There is considerable empirical evidence that physical attractiveness impacts employment decision making, with the result that the more attractive individual, the greater the likelihood that that person will be hired. This is generalization is known as the ‘what is beautiful is good’ stereotype† (14). What we can see from this quote is basically that if a beautiful woman comes in to interview for a managers position she will most likely be hired versus, lets say, an obese woman. Based solely on looks, and not on qualifications, the hirer will have already assumed that because this woman is beautiful she must also be intelligent (halo effect). And because the other woman is obese she just has to be lazy and irresponsible. This is an example of the devil effect. The hirer will probably ask themselves something along the lines of â€Å"if this person cannot manage her own weight how will she manage this office? † It is yet unfortunate, that often many decisions in the business world can be made based on that one negative or undesirable trait in a person. The decision not to hire her because she isn’t skinny and pretty is biased and unfair. â€Å"Making hiring decisions based on non-job-related factors is detrimental to the overall organizational performance† (Shahani-Denning, 14). She may actually be more qualified for the position, and have a more impressive resume and job experience, versus the â€Å"beautiful† woman. When I think about how the halo and devil effect relate to today’s culture/popular culture, I think of the police department and how people get profiled on the street. There is a lot of controversy going on that police profile based too much on looks and not enough on behaviors. For example, there are often times when I am walking down the street or about to take the train and I will see the police stopping a young kid who is dressed baggy. I believe they assume based on his baggy attire that he cannot be anything more than a â€Å"thug/dealer† or delinquent kid cutting school. They may be stopping this kid while someone walking right past them, who might actually look like your average Joe, could actually be the â€Å"thug/dealer. † This would be the devil effect. But, because this average Joe is more attractive in the sense that he isn’t wearing his pants low, he will be overlooked or looked up upon by the police versus the rest of society as someone â€Å"good. † This would be the halo effect. Overall, the halo and devil effect are very interesting. I believe these effects impact that world unconsciously every single day. We can look to many products, such as Apple products, and many people, like those involved in hiring processes to fully understand how both can play out in todays society.

Digging -by seamus Heaney The poet, Seamus Heaney uses simple words in his poem which is beautifully portrayed as well as easy to understand. The poem is basically about the poets respect and admiration of his father's and grandfather's hard work. The poem begins in the present tense form. The poet, Heaney, is in his room, writing while his father is digging. It can be assumed that the poet is near a window so that when he looks outside he can see his father digging. It is important to note that Heaney â€Å"looks down† at his father's â€Å"straining rump†.Literally his position at the window is elevated but we also get the sense that Heaney somehow feels superior to manual work and that he does not like this feeling. The next stanza takes us back to previous years before his father's retirement from farming: â€Å"Bends low, comes up twenty years away†. We move effortlessly and beautifully from the present day flowerbed to the previous years potato drills. The poet then begins to describe his father's skills. The paradoxical â€Å"coarse boot nestled† shows the physicality and hardwork of digging alongside the love his father has for it.Heaney uses a two line stanza beginning with the exclamatory â€Å"By God† to take us further back to his grandfather's digging skills. The exclamation and the conversational tone add a feeling of being with Heaney as he reminisces. Neatly Heaney has taken us back to his forefathers to show that working with the land has always been a tradition in the family. He has broken this chain by choosing to become a writer. The next stanza is a memory of visiting his grandfather as he cuts peat from the bog.The â€Å"bottle corked sloppily with paper† reflects Heaney's clumsiness in practical matters but also a different use of paper to the one he is really skilled at. This is a family proud of their achievements which are measured by a spade and the ability to handle one: â€Å"My grandfather could cut more turf in a day than any other man on Toner's bog†. The penultimate stanza reveals the difficulties created by Heaney's wish to write. Scott Peterson Found Guilty of First-Degree Murder Scott Peterson was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson, and second-degree murder in the death of his unborn son Conner. The jury reached a verdict in the case in its seventh day of deliberations, after three jurors were replaced during the trial, including the first foreman. The verdict came only eight hours after Judge Delucchi dismissed the first foreman of the  jury, who was replaced by a male alternate. The new foreman was juror No. 6, a firefighter and paramedic. First, Judge Delucchi replaced juror No. 7, who reportedly did her own independent research or investigation into the case, contrary to court rules. The judge told the jury they had to start over in their deliberations. They responded by electing a new foreman. The following day, the judge dismissed juror No. 5, the former foreman of the jury, who reportedly asked to be removed from the case. The jury deliberated all day Wednesday with the new foreman in place, took the day off Thursday due to the Veterans Day holiday, and deliberated only a few hours Friday before announcing they had a verdict. The total deliberations lasted almost 44 hours  after the jury heard five months of testimony from 184 witnesses. Scott Peterson was charged with the murder of his pregnant wife Laci Denise Peterson and their unborn son Conner Peterson who disappeared sometime between December  23 and December 24, 2002. The badly decomposed remains of Laci Peterson and the couples fetus washed ashore in April 2003, not far from where Peterson said he went on a solo fishing trip the day she vanished. Peterson was arrested April 18, 2003, in San Diego, the day that the remains of Laci and Conner were officially identified. The Prosecutions Theory The prosecution believed that Scott Peterson meticulously planned the murder of his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson because he did not want to give up his lifestyle to be tied down to a wife and baby. They believe that he purchased the 14-foot Gamefisher fishing boat two weeks before she disappeared for the sole purpose of using it to dispose of her body in the San Francisco Bay. Prosecutor Rick Distaso told the jury that Peterson used an 80-pound bag of cement he purchased to make anchors to weigh down Lacis body at the bottom of the bay. They showed jurors photographs of five round impressions in the cement dust on the floor of Petersons warehouse. Only one anchor was found in the boat. Prosecutors also believe that Peterson originally planned to use a golfing outing as his alibi for the day that Laci disappeared, but for some reason dumping her body into the San Francisco Bay took longer than he planned and he was stuck with using the fishing trip as his alibi. The problem the prosecution had was there was no direct evidence proving that Peterson murdered his wife, much less disposed of her body. Their case was constructed totally on circumstantial evidence. The Defense of Scott Peterson Defense attorney Mark Geragos promised the jury in his opening statement that he would present evidence that would show that Scott Peterson was innocent of the charges, but in the end, the defense could not produce any direct evidence pointing to any other suspect. Geragos mostly used the prosecutions own witnesses to offer the jury alternative explanations of the states circumstantial case. He brought Scott Petersons father to the stand to explain that Scott had been an avid fisherman since an early age and that it was not unusual for Scott not to brag about major purchases, like the fishing boat. Geragos also offered testimony that indicated that Peterson used the remainder of the 80-pound bag of cement to repair his driveway. He also tried to explain his clients erratic behavior after Lacis disappearance to being hunted by the media, not because he was trying to elude or deceive the police. The defense case took a major setback when an expert witness, who testified that Conner Peterson was still alive after December  23, did not stand up to cross-examination which brought out that he had made a huge assumption in his calculations. Many courtroom observers, even those with backgrounds in criminal prosecution, agreed that Mark Geragos did an excellent job during the prosecutions case in offering the jury alternate explanations for almost every aspect of the circumstantial evidence. In the end, the jury believed the prosecution proved its case that Scott Peterson premeditated the death of his pregnant wife.
